POLICE in Lusaka have arrested 12 suspected criminals in connection with stolen household property in Chalala Township worth millions of Kwacha some of which has been recovered.

Speaking during a media briefing Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo, who displayed some of the recovered items at Chilenje police station said police officers conducted an operation from the end of January, with the help of the public and managed to apprehend 12 suspects.

Ms Katongo explained that the 12 suspects had been terrorising the public at shopping malls, stealing items from motor vehicles when people packed their cars and also breaking into homes in Chalala.

“From the 12 suspects, five of them were behind crimes at the shopping malls and they were using two Toyota Corolla vehicles which the police recovered.

“And seven were behind the break-ins in Chalala area and they were using three motor vehicles that the police also recovered,” she said.

She explained that from the seven suspects, the police managed to recover items such as 14 television plasma sets, 40 cellphones and tablets, decoders, home theatres and various gadgets they were using to break into people’s homes including uniforms for the defence and security officers.

Ms Katongo said the 12 suspects would appear in court soon once the date was set.
