IT is very questionable why the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) is seizing assets on unverified and pedestrian information, former State House press aide Dickson Jere has said.
Mr Jere said Government was paying huge sums of money from past seized assets from the Taskforce on Corruption.
He said the standard procedure was to get the information and verify with relevant stakeholders before seizing the assets.
Mr Jere worked under President Rupiah Banda and was reacting to the mass raids the DEC was conducting following tips from the public.
“Government is paying huge sums of money from past seized assets from Taskforce on Corruption,” he said.
Mr Jere said the reported raids raised more questions. “Why seize property based on unverified information? Get the information and verify with your team before seizing the assets.
“We have enough cases from the Mwanawasa Taskforce to date. The government is paying a lot of money in false seizures after being sued for keeping assets without tangible investigations or prosecution,” he said.
Mr Jere cautioned DEC to be careful for now and allow thorough investigations.
