‘Drunken’ ex-soldier shoots girl (12)

ONE person has died while three others have sustained injuries after a 58-year-old retired Zambia Army serviceman went on rampage and opened fire at a crowd at 10-Miles market in Katuba.

According to an eye witness, the ex-soldier identified as Chrispine Mwansa was driving in a drunken state and almost hit a female trader.

He came out of the car and slapped the woman. It was at this point that people got angry and tried to interven but in the process he managed to reach for his pistol from his vehicle.

Eye witnesses narrated that the former soldier opened fire on the crowd, killing a 12- year-old girl while three others sustained gunshot wounds.

Meanwhile, a police source disclosed that the suspect has been arrested and was being held at Ngwerere police station.

He said that the suspect was picked up from his home in the same area at around mid-night.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo confirmed the incident which happened on Saturday in a telephone interview.

She said that Mr Mwansa of Machaya Village, Chief Mungule of Chibombo is a retired Staff Sergeant in the Zambia Army.

She said he shot Naomi Chiyesu, who suffered gunshot wounds on the left hand and chest and died on arrival at Matero Level One Hospital.

Also shot were Mr Felistus Chisanga aged 48 of Chief Mungule who was shot on the right palm, Ms Astridah Mpande aged 22 also of Kalabo Village who sustained wounds on the neck.

Ms Theresa Phiri aged 29 of Chilanga’s Musekese far was shot on the left arm.

Ms Katongo explained that a pistol has been recovered from him with 12 rounds of ammunition.

“The three victims are admitted in Matero Level One Hospital while the body Naomi Chiyesu has been deposited in UTH mortuary awaiting postmodern,” she said.
