Livestock scheme cheers Monze DC, Munachoongo Muleya.

By ANDREW MUKOMA

THE Enhanced Small Holder Livestock Investment Project (E-SLIP) has provided valuable support to the livestock sector, says Monze District Commissioner Munachoongo Muleya.

Ms Muleya said there was need to strengthen government’s capacity for animals disease control and reducing incidences of East Coast Fever and Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia which were major causes of animal mortality.

She explained that milk collection centres, namely, Nteme, Kaumba, Munyenze, St. Marys, Monze, Kayuni and Silwili dairies had benefitted from the E-SLIP project.

The E-SLIP, she said, had been providing capacity building, technical support, knowledge in rangeland management, pasture and forage seeds to cooperative members.

Ms Muleya said Government had empowered women and youths through the E-SLIP livestock pass-on project.

She added that the project would make an indelible contribution to poverty reduction, household food security and nutrition.

Ms Muleya said the recent handing over of dairy cattle would mitigate the challenges small holder farmers had been going through.

“This pass–on scheme that has begun in Monze will surely empower the youths and women within the district and will increase in volumes of milk and also add to food security in the District,” Ms Muleya said.

She said that this has become a problem which requires an urgent solution.
