OVER 20 companies have partnered with Zambia Sugar PLC in to successfully host the 2017 Zambia Sugar Open Golf Championship teeing off on April 21.

Head of corporate affairs and communications Japhet Banda told a media breakfast yesterday at Lusaka Golf Club that Zambia Sugar was humbled by the sponsorship response from various partners towards the staging of the event. “The aggregate sponsorship of US$180,000 by over 20 partners is encouraging and a sign of confidence that they have in Zambia Sugar and its ability to organise a professional and world class event,

“We will ensure a successful tournament that lives up to its reputation as being the prestigious event on the Sunshine Tour calendar,” Banda said.

He said the prestigious tournament had so far attracted 114 foreign golfers and 30 locals.

He said that part of the proceeds from the tournament will go towards the development of junior golf in the country. “A sport like golf has the potential to mitigate challenges of poverty, underdevelopment and ignorance among young people by providing the tools to help them become better and responsible people in society,”Banda said.

Zambia Sugar has pumped US$150,000 in the event while the organising committee has raised 80 percent of the US$500,000 budget.
