Kabwe High Court Judge Eddie Sikazwe has overturned and granted a K15 million (Kr15000) cash bail to 74-year-old retired Mkushi farmer accused of causing the death of over 50 people in last week’s road traffic accident in Chibombo District.
Overturning the Magistrate’s ruling yesterday in Kabwe, Judge Sikazwe ordered that the accused, Abraham Vandeem, surrenders his passport to the State and should report himself to the nearest police station every two weeks.
This was after lawyers representing the accused from Kabesha and Co and A. Woods and company appealed to the High Court against the Kabwe Principal Resident Magistrate John Mbuzi’s decision to deny the accused person bail on grounds of his nationality and that the said investments he had in Zambia.
Mr. Vandeem, who appeared before the Kabwe Principal Resident Magistrate Mbuzi on Tuesday for reading of the charges which took almost 45 minutes in a fully packed court room was denied bail on grounds that he did not tabulate his business.
