EFFORTS by the Zambia Army have instilled a sense of responsibility among citizens and the cleaning of surroundings should continue even after the cholera epidemic is eradicated, says Mandevu Justin Kabwe councillor Teddy Mwaba.

Mr Mwaba said following President Edgar Lungu’s directive and the intervention by the defence forces the community was adhering to strict hygienic standards and that he hoped change of mind-set would continue even after the cholera fight was won.

He warned that members of the community who would be found carelessly throwing garbage would face the law.

In an interview, the civic leader thanked the community for maintaining the highest health practices hence reduced cholera cases in Justin Kabwe ward.

Mr Mwaba said the essence of piped clean water had helped the community to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases and encouraged residents to continue living in a clean environment to avoid the scourge.

“I am happy over the efforts by the Zambia Army working under the directive from President Edgar Lungu which has instilled a sense of responsibility among citizens and change of attitude towards cleanliness which needs to continue even after the cholera fight is won,” he said.

He thanked Mandevu Member of Parliament Jean Kapata for visiting the area especially when cholera was at its highest in the constituency and for her sensitisation campaign against the disease. Mr Mwaba said Ms Kapata was impressed at the pace the ward was doing its work despite sewer blockages which were currently being worked on by the utility company.

He said the cleaning exercise is an on-going exercise and that institutions in the ward such as schools should every month conduct routine cleaning exercises and the same applied to homes.

Mr Mwaba thanked churches in Mandevu constituency for participating in the clean-up drive campaign. The churches include Catholic, BIGOCA, Jerusalem Christian Life Changing Ministries, Christ Centre of Hope.

He said the church responded quickly as well as favourably at a short notice and affirmed that the clean-up drive would continue until cholera was defeated.
