THE European Union (EU) has released K300 million towards the fight against gender based violence (GBV) in two provinces of Zambia.
The funds will be utilised through a sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) prevention and support programme which was launched in Luapula and Northern provinces.
EU Ambassador to Zambia, Alessandro Marian, Northern province permanent secretary, Elias Kamanga and Ministry of Gender director Sandra Ndlovu graced the launch on Tuesday.
According to Ambassador Marian, the programme would run for six years and would cover all the districts in the two regions.
He explained that the programme would be implemented through the provision of grants to eligible implementing partners selected through a call for proposals.
“The programme will also support strengthening of the government institutional and policy framework and multi-sectoral coordination of SGBV prevention and response through technical assistance to the Ministry of Gender and capacity building support to relevant government ministries, departments and structures involved in combating SGBV.”
He explained that BBC Media Action in conjunction with community radio stations in both provinces would receive a grant of K20 million grant for sensitization on SGBV.
And Northern province permanent secretary, Elias Kamanga thanked the EU for providing the grant.
The PS further said the fight against sexual and gender based violence should be a collective effort of every Zambian.
