Zambia United National Freedom Fighters Association (ZUNFFA) has embarked on a fundraising initiative to raise money aimed at helping surviving freedom fighters in the country.

ZUNFFA National Treasurer Betty Chilunga explained that the money raised would be used for logistics in their countrywide search to identify surviving freedom fighters in the country.

She said once the freedom fighters were found the statistics would be forwarded to government for further action.

“As an association we are holding a luncheon at the National Assembly Motel this weekend, Saturday we want people to come forward, cards are available to be bought at K200 and K300 each.

We want to tour the nine provinces to go and identify the living freedom fighters so that we have statistics to forward to government for further action,” she said.

Ms. Chilunga said a number of freedom fighters in the country were faced with social and economic challenges in their daily lives.

“Many freedom fighters in the nine provinces of this country are going hungry some of them have nowhere to sleep.

“When they die there is no one to bury them not even a coffin. If you go to their funerals there it’s terrible, there is no food, nothing,” she said.

Mr Chilunga said that it was about time that Zambian people took care of their freedom fighters like other countries in the world did.

She urged the government and all sympathising partners to take a leaf and come forward to support the freedom fighters in the country.

The freedom fighter and former United National Independence Party (UNIP) member of the central committee said it was important that the freedom fighters were taken care of throughout the country because they fought hard to bring about the independence that the Zambians were enjoying today.
