KANSANSHI Mining Company is set to sink 12 boreholes around communities faced with water challenges in Solwezi district.
Company public relations Manager Godfrey Msiska said the mining firm valued the need for people to drink clean and safe water.
He said many lives had been lost as a result of drinking polluted and contaminated water.
Mr Msiska said it is the mining firm’s moral duty to ensure that the health of the people was maintained.
He explained that out of the 12 boreholes, five were already operational and awaiting to be commissioned.
“This is a project that we started late last year, and by the end of February this year, the remaining seven will also be completed,’’ he said.
“We have a moral duty as a firm to ensure that the health of those people is looked into. And a baseline survey we did a long time ago shows that the water is not portable in some communities. And that is why we are embarking on this programme,’’ he said.
