SHOPRITE and Hungry Lion have invested K185, 000 in the fight against cholera by producing 250 000 awareness materials such as pamphlets and adverts.
Shoprite was also conducting sensitisation campaigns through the media, general manager Mr Charles Bota has disclosed.
The general manager said management had embarked on an initiative to sensitize members of staff across the country about cholera and the dangers of the disease.
He said the exercise is ongoing.
Mr. Bota noted that food handlers had particularly been advised to uphold high levels of personal hygiene.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation, he said when three of the Hungry Lion branches were closed management came up with a more intense awareness initiative to educate the member of staff on enhanced hygiene practices.
“As management we decided together with the Minister of Health that we will do sensitisation for our staff and we have since engaged the Lusaka City Council to be involved in this exercise because they are the experts,” he said.
He explained that the Lusaka City Council (LCC) health department conducted health talks with Shoprite and Hungry Lion food handlers on the importance of observing high standards of hygiene to prevent further spread of cholera.
He said according to the health inspectors food handlers should always make sure they wash their hands regularly and keep their nails short.
He explained that the inspectors advised that the members of staff washed fresh foods with chemically treated or boiled water.
