THE Chitukuko Women’s Club will empower members in a practical way through knitting, tailoring and other skills to generate income, says Patriotic Front Kapwepwe Ward 25 councillor Patrick Salubusa.

Mr. Salubusa emphasised the importance of forming women clubs as a way of empowering the community with life skills through savings, knitting, tailoring and poultry.

The civic leader said this over the weekend when he toured Chitukuko zone and interacted with the club members and they agreed to raise money through their skills and help the majority of the members who were widows to venture into poultry.

“We have been talking about women empowerment and the importance of forming women clubs as we look at ways and means of empowering women, and to achieve this the Chitukuko Women’s Club has embarked on activities through savings, knitting, tailoring and many other skills,” he said.

Mr. Salubusa said it was agreed with the club to introduce a Friday market at Lilanda bus station so that their products, which included door mats, could be made available to the public on a weekly basis.

He thanked a model, Sipiwe Benasho, for having made a donation to the club and urged other organisations to come to their aid.

Mr. Salubusa said his vision was to see a ‘‘literate, healthy and wealthy’’ ward but that without education, especially helping women to read and write, it could be a far-fetched dream.

He said gender based violence could not be fought with low literacy levels and that any business required some calculations and basic understanding of English and Information Communication Technology.

Mr. Salubusa said the ward had partnered with Potters House and Moonlight School which would see more than 300 women go back to school and some sit for Grade 7, 9 and GCE examinations.

He said the ward has partnered with New Chunga Primary School to offer ICT training to the womenfolk and that the initiative has attracted a lot of women who were only required to pay K50 per term.
