A STANDARD for motor vehicle used tyres has been published by the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) which clearly specifies requirements for the commodity.

The standard, among other requirements, clearly specifies that a used tyre should have a minimum average tread depth of 4.0 mm, measured from four points or locations on the tyre with the shallowest tread depth.

ZABS head of marketing and public relations, Hazel Zulu, said the development of this standard was undertaken by the Automobiles Technical Committee represented by a number of institutions.

Ms. Zulu said among the institutions were, the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), Toyota Zambia Limited, CFAO Zambia and Commuters Rights Association of Zambia.

She said others included the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), Tyre King Zambia and Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) to mention but a few.

“ZABS is confident that the development and publication of this standard will significantly contribute to reduction in the high number of road traffic accidents and also cover the majority of Zambians who may not be able to buy brand new tyres,

“ZABS develops national standards to promote public safety and health and to protect the environment,” she said.

Ms. Zulu explained that the development of the standard came about because used tyres were also perceived to be one of the main contributing factors to the high number of road traffic accidents in our country.

“It is against this background that ZABS in collaboration with various stakeholders developed and published the standard for used tyres (ZS1051) which will be used to check used tyres that can be used on vehicles to enhance public safety on the roads,” Ms. Zulu said.
