ZAMBIAN Breweries, through its Manja Pamodzi Project, steppedup efforts aimed at tackling litter by handing over two trucks to Lusaka waste collectors to help with collection.
Speaking during the presentation in Lusaka yesterday, the firms country director, Jose Moran, said the gesture would help entrepreneurs to work even harder.
“We need to lead by example so we thought we can be the first ones to make the donation of these two trucks to our two top performers to help them improve their condition of work and also amount of waste that they are collecting.
“As Zambian Breweries we are hoping to see more companies come on board and make contributions it can not only be the donation of trucks but anything meaningful will make a difference to the project,” Mr Moran said.
One of the beneficiaries, Zyoli Ng’andu of Lusaka’s Mtendere Compound, urged the public not to look down upon people who depended on collecting waste for recycling as it was also a source of income.
“Collecting solid waste is one way of promoting the secular economy in the country where waste is not looked at as waste but as a resource, so it is high time that many people opened there eyes because we are making ends meet through recyclable materials which we sell for cash,” Mr Ng’andu said.
He commended Zambian Breweries for the gesture and encouraged other people in the business to put in their best and work extremely hard saying hard work pays off.
Another beneficiary, Harrison Musonda of Lusaka’s Chunga Township, thanked the firm for according him an opportunity to have the truck saying transport was cardinal in his business.
The Manja Pamodzi initiative empowers members of the community to use litter as an income-generating venture while at the same time aiming to make Zambia clean.
