DAVIES CHAMA, NYONI STILL IN DETENTION, SAYS LAWYER

By NATION REPORTER

DETAINED PF vice national chairperson, Davis Chama and his co-charged Brian Nyoni are still detained in police custody for seven days as Vice President Mutale Nalumango yesterday apologised for having misled Parliament that attempted murder charge was non-bailable.

Chama South MP, Davy Mung’andu said he together with his Chama North counterpart, Yotam Mtayachalo were not consulted.

Mr Mung’andu told Parliament yesterday that the people in Chama were unhappy with the decision because they wanted the district to remain with Muchinga as the provincial headquarters was near.

Speaking during the Vice President’s question time, Mr Mung’andu said people in Chama were calling them to complain over the decision the President made without consulting them.

“Unfortunately, we people of Chama were not consulted. Hon. Mtayachalo and myself we were not consulted and we have received a lot of calls from the people in Chama indicating that they were very unhappy with this decision.

“As   Government, are you going to reconsider this decision considering that Chipata will be about 700 kilometres for the people of Chiabale in terms of distance?  And the people of Chilubanama who are 10 kilometres away from Chinsali it will be about 600 kilometres to Chipata.  Are you going to reverse the decision so that Chama can remain in Muchinga?” Mr Mung’andu asked the Vice President.

In response, Vice president Mutale Nalumango said the decision was made after President Hichilema made due consultation with stakeholders and upon consideration of the law.

Ms Nalumango said the traditional leaders had petitioned the President to consider taking the district back to Eastern Province.

“The President cannot just dream and say let me do this. The demand came from the people of Chama themselves. If the Honorable members were not consulted, it is important to engage the people of Chama. And if they want it to be reversed, it is up to them.

“But the President acted on information given to him. There are people surely in Chama that made that demand that they want to revert back

President Hichilema announced his intention to take Chirundu, Itezhi tezhi and Chama back Southern and eastern provinces, respectively.
