Malawi thrash Zambia in Netball Africa Cup opener
By MICHAEL MIYOBA
ZAMBIA’S dream to win the netball Africa Cup suffered a major setback after recording a disappointing 70-36 defeat to powerhouse Malawi in their first game played yesterday in Windhoek.
The Zambian team which struggled with one win, one draw and three defeats at the pent series tournament recently held in Namibia, were no match for the Malawians who are among the favourites to bag the Netball Africa Cup title.
After finishing the pent series on fifth position with three points, Team Zambia, who managed to beat Kenya 50-42 will fight to bounce back when they face Uganda today.
It will be the second time the two sides will be meeting within a week with Zambia seeking revenge for the 76-22 humiliation in the pent series.
Having just won the Pent Series unbeaten, Uganda will be hoping they can cause another upset to win the Africa Cup.
The Netball Africa Cup taking place in Windhoek Namibia will run up to November 16, 2021 with defending champions South Africa aiming to defend title won in 2019, the last time the championship was played.
Apart from Zambia, Namibia is also hosting Botswana, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi and South Africa for a week of competition.
