ZESCO ENGAGES WATER UTILITIES OVER US$39M DEBT

By ADRIAN MWANZA

WATER utility companies are owing Zesco Limited in excess of US$39 million in unpaid bills forcing the company to issue a demand notice. Zesco Senior Public Relations manager Dr John Kunda said they were in discussions with water utility firms to see how best they could recover the money owed.

He said Zesco had written to the firms who later asked for the parties to meet and discuss on the way forward. “We have not taken any action against any of these firms because we are in discussions hoping to come up with an amicable solution to the issue,” he said.

Dr Kunda said he was hopeful that they would soon come up with a proper payment plan that would offset the balance owed to them. He said Zesco understood the challenges they faced that is why they decided to meet the firms so that they could make a commitment. Meanwhile, Dr Kunda said that Luapula had experienced erratic electricity supply due to a problem which engineers were trying to rectify. He said the province was the only one affected but that they were working round the clock to ensure that power was restored.

“There has been a problem in Luapula Province which has been experiencing power outages but our engineers are working on it,” Dr Kunda said.
