ZAMRA Director General, Principal Regulatory Officer arrested

ZAMBIA Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) Director- General, Bernice Mwale and Principal Regulatory Officer Brian Kabika have been arrested for alleged corrupt practices involving Honeybee Pharmacy by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to a statement by ACC spokesperson, Queen Chibwe, the duo on dates unknown but between July 1st and September 30th, 2019 failed to comply with applicable procedure and regulations when processing license number in favor of Honeybee Pharmacy.  

Ms Chibwe said Ms Mwale aged 64 of Chudleigh, Lusaka and Mr Kabika aged 42 of Meanwood Chamba Valley have been charged with willful failure to comply with applicable law and procedure.

“Details are that on dates unknown but between 1st July 2019 and 30 th September, 2019 Ms Mwale and Mr Kabika jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, failed to comply with applicable procedure and regulations when processing license number PL/ 5- 00091/19, in favor of Honeybee Pharmacy,” Ms Chibwe said.

She said the suspects have since been released on bond and will appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, Ms Chibwe said the Kasama Magistrate Court has convicted a Ndola businessman to four years imprisonment for corrupt practices.

She said the commission in November last year, arrested and charged Albert Oraya Nkonde 39, of house no. CHT 3277, Chifubu Ndola, for corruptly giving K5,000 cash gratification to a Zambia Police as a reward or inducement for her to release three impounded motor vehicles that traffic Police officers had impounded.

Ms Chibwe said the matter was presided over by Magistrate Hon. Samson Mumba.
