FORMER Zambian and African rally champion Muna Singh has died at the age of 53 after an illness that saw him undergo a liver surgery a few weeks before his death.
The Zambia Motor Sport Association said it was shocked by the death of the veteran rally driver whose exploits behind the wheel put Zambia on the world map.
“From our ZMSA family, it is with deepest condolences to the Singh family and friends. We are deeply saddened and shocked to hear the passing of a true legend Muna Snr,” ZMSA said.
Meanwhile, Minister of Sports Youth and Arts Elvis Nkandu described Singh as a legendary rally ace who raised the country’s flag on the continent with flawless and impeccable driving.
“We have learnt with profound sorrow and sadness about the demise of a veteran rally driver and former Zambian and African rally champion Muna Singh Snr.
“His immense contribution to the growth of the motorsport rally in our country is embedded in our memories and will forever be cherished. On behalf of the government and on my own behalf, I wish to send my heartfelt condolences and prayer of comfort to the late Muna Singh Snr family and the entire Zambia motorsport rally fraternity on the loss of a true legend,” Nkandu said.
And former Vice President Nevers Mumba said; “What a great loss. Two times Africa Motor Rally Champion, Muna Singh leaves behind a family in mourning, an entire nation in shock and a fanbase that will never forget what a legend he truly was.”
“Muna loved the Lord. He was a Rhema Bible School graduate and a member of Miracle Life Family Church. RIP Champ,” Mumba said.
Singh, who won the 2008 Africa Rally Championship in Tanzania leaves behind a wife Natalie Singh, children Rammy Singh, Jassy Singh and “Copycat” Muna Singh Junior who followed his father’s footsteps of being a local and African Rally Champion.
