WWF calls for partnership with the media in promoting sustainable agriculture

By SHERRY CHABALA

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Zambia country director, Nachilala Nkombo has called for strong partnership with the media in the promotion of sustainable agriculture for the country to effectively utilise the available land for food production.

Ms Nkombo told Millennium TV that the high rate at which land is being misused requires concerted efforts from various stakeholders to prevent land degradation.

“The media should partner with us to sell the message of sustainable agriculture production because if we continue the way we have been using our land inefficiently, we continue the way we have been using our water inefficiently in a way that is wasteful, we are going to have food problems downstream.

“Farmers will not be able to put the food on the table. We know over the years, we have partnered with you as a media, we want to hear from you through this forum feedback on what has worked well and what has not worked well. And given the challenge and the opportunities that are there in conservation, how do we simplify the message? How do we get the decision makers understand what it is that we are concerned about and make not just WWF or the journalists, but the, the decision maker, the business leader also championing conservation,” Ms Nkombo said.

She warned that failure to engage in sustainable agriculture would adversely affect Zambia’s food security

Ms. Nkombo underscored that the partnership with the media would help spread and interpret information on conservation.
