Top Police command needs retraining – Mundubile

By NATION REPORTER

THERE is need to consider retraining the Zambia Police top command to align them with changing trends about modern policing and how to respect Presidential pronouncements, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Brian Mundubile has advised.

Mr. Mundubile said the top police command who issue instructions to subordinates were the ones that need training because majority are Senior Police officers recruited before transforming the Zambia Police Force to the Police Service. Mr Mundubile, the Patriotic Front (PF) presidential candidate said there was a likelihood that the top Police command may not fully appreciate that Zambia had a Police Service as opposed to the Police Force and that policing trends had changed intensely to include the respect for human rights.

He said the top command was disrespecting President Hakainde Hichilema who on several occasions guided that suspects arrested should be released on police bond within 24 hours after the arrest.

He stated that President Hichilema had on several occasions guided the Zambia Police service to ensure that suspects were released on bond within 24 hours but that the top police command who were the implementers of the President’s directives were largely defying his instruction.

The Mporokoso PF Member of Parliament said the announcement that junior officers that were trained under the former ruling party administration should be retrained or fired because they are perceived to be PF cadres was a way of victimising junior officers that get instructions and orders from the top command.
