PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has disclosed that Zambia has become the world’s largest emeralds producer after taking over Chile and yet value addition companies can not buy emeralds locally.

Mr Hichilema said Zambia has taken over from Colombia which has been the largest producer for some years now.
He said the development is impressing as it is critical to the country’s wellbeing.
President Hichilema has since urged the emerald mining players to ensure that there is value addition to the mineral.
And Mr Hichilema has announced that the shaft 28 mine in Luanshya will soon be operational.
He said the investor engaged to take over the operations is currently dewatering the mine.
President Hichilema said the mine which has been grounded for 20 years will now start operating which will be vital for the country’s economy.
Speaking during the 2nd Private Sector Day under the Public Private Dialogue Forum (PPDF) in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Hichilema said the operationalation of the mine will create jobs and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
President Hichilema has however challenged the investors to engage local contractors. He said this is the policy of the UPND so that the local contractors can benefit from the mining sector.
“We do appreciate the investors, we are asking you to work with the local businesses, give contracts to local contractors, President Hichilema said.
Meanwhile, President Hichilema said he is of the view that Zambia has a visa waiver with many countries.
Mr Hichilema argued that the security concerns can be addressed through technology.
He said doing so will enable the country to do business with many countries.
