THE year 2016 was a tough year for the Zambia Army in terms of sporting activities, Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Paul Mihova has said.

Gen Mihova attributed this to logistical and administrative problems.

He was however happy that the challenges that the sports clubs faced were alleviated through support received from cooperating partners.

The Army Commander said this in a speech read for him by the Zambia Army Deputy Commander and Chief of staff Major general Jackson Miti on Friday evening during the 2016 sport presentation awarding ceremony which held at Akarakan barracks banquet hall in Lusaka.

“The year 2016 was not a good year in terms of sporting activities, because of a number of challenges that the Green Buffaloes Sports side faced. But however, we are pleased that some of those challenges have been alleviated through various support from our cooperating partners,” he said.

Gen Mihova presented awards to the deserving sportsmen and women who raised the profile of the Zambia Army.

ZNBC’s sports reporter Chris Bwalya was among the people who was awarded a trophy.

Bwalya was awarded for his consistent coverage of sponsored Green Buffaloes Football Club, boxing, rugby and golf among other sports disciplines.

And Gen Mihova said that sport was a unifying factor in the nation.

He congratulated the deserving winners for their spirited performance, hard work and determination.

The Army Commander further challenged those that did not win to put in their best in this year’s season.

He further directed all Army sports clubs to meet the goals and expectations in 2017 by being disciplined, which he said was cardinal to service delivery.

And speaking earlier, Zambia Army Director of Sport Thomas Bwalya said that 32 medals were harvested last year.

He said 20 were gold, 10 silver and two bronze respectively.

Lieutenant-Colonel Bwalya assured the Commander that his sports men and women would do better this year.

National Sports Council of Zambia chairperson Mwamba Kalenga, senior Zambia Army staff as well as other senior government officials were also present to witness the prize giving ceremony.
