FORMER Bweengwa UPND Member of Parliament Highvie Hamududu says time for politics is gone and that now politicians must focus their energies on building Zambia’s economy collectively.

Mr Hamududu said people could not continue talking about politics for the next five years instead of helping to develop the nation.

In an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday, Mr Hamududu said time for politics had passed and that now was time for Government to start working towards improving the well-being of its citizens.

He said Government must now start preparing for the 2016/ 2017 farming season in order to ensure that the country had enough food for consumption and export.

“Let us now focus on improving the well-being of our people; we cannot just be talking about politics throughout but let us get down to business and start working,” he said.

Mr Hamududu singled out agriculture as the major area which needed Government and everyone’s quick and adequate preparation.

He said Zambia must start preparing now for the next farming season and ensure that it produced enough for export in a bid to earn foreign exchange.

Mr Hamududu said agriculture was one of the sectors where Government could invest and yield results in a short period of time because maize had a short gestation period to yield results.

“Government should start providing correct information to farmers by engaging proper extension officers to give correct information to the farmers.

“President Edgar Lungu was right when he said everyone must at least own a garden so that there can be enough agricultural produce in the country,” Mr Hamududu said.

He called on citizens across the country to heed President Lungu’s call of owning gardens and begin to produce in order to be able to produce enough for export and earn foreign exchange.

Mr Hamududu said countries like Congo DR, Malawi and others in the Great Lakes region all needed food from Zambia and it was possible to supply the entire region.

Mr Hamududu said after retiring from politics he decided to concentrate on farming with his family in order to be able to contribute to the country’s food security.

“So let us take a break from talking politics and concentrate on bettering the economy,” Mr Hamududu said.
