Dear Editor,

The Catholic Church, no doubt is one of the biggest religious institutions in the world.

There are even talks that the church in fact rules the world because of it powerful organised leadership and membership.

But when the same church recently apologized for its part in that despicable Rwandan genocide that took place over a period of 100 days, from April 6 to July 16, 1994 and which claimed more than 800,000 lives of mostly the Tutsi minority, my heart beat scared me to death.

I mean here was the Church which was supposed to be sponsoring peace and love among the people, yet it was in the forefront supporting hate which resulted in a serious bloody tribal war.

But home in Zambia, the same Catholic Church through its recent pastoral letter, its message was hardly inspiring and totally lacked an iota for promoting love and harmony in the nation.

It appeared to have been written by men and women of God with bitter hearts which should not be the case.

Instead the Bishops led by Lusaka Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu, openly took sides by supporting the opposition cause instead of a reconciliatory approach. Instead of encouraging the so-called warring parties to sit round the table and discuss their differences, the Bishops were more than eager to condemn the current government for very dubious reasons.

By the way the same Bishops are also known as fathers but totally failed to give a fatherly advice on hot issues in the nation

No wonder the Bishop’s letter was not received well by many concerned citizens as soon as it was published. The citizens’ concerns, I think, were too genuine to be ignored.

It is the same Church which is totally against the construction of a National Prayer House defeating the purpose of its existence because its number one duty is to save souls before Jesus second coming. Totally mind-boggling!

So my purpose for writing this letter is merely to appeal to the Catholic Bishops to be more serious with issues concerning this great nation.

They should be objective and seen to be inviting the presence of God in people’s minds as that is only way through which peace can be assured. Nothing else will do as they say that with God everything is possible.

Yes, individual Bishops may have issues to pick with the current government, but that should not be turned into a general picture of the church.

Why can’t the current crop of Bishops remember the style of Cardinal Medardo Joseph Mazombwe administration who I think did a swell job in his all works as a man of God?

Or do they want to make another apology on Zambia?
