By CHARLES MUSONDA

A LUSAKA resident has been committed to the High Court for trial in a case he is facing a charge of strangling to death an Indian man who attempted to have anal sex with him.

In this case, Moses Zulu, 20, of Garden compound, is charged with one count of murdering 48-year-old Manesh Sharmah on July 4, 2021 in Lusaka and another count of aggravated robbery. In the second count, particulars of offence are that on the same date Zulu stole an LG plasma television set worth K5, 000 from the late Sharmah while armed with an electric cable.

According to the police, Sharma was discovered murdered in his unmarked flat on the 10th floor of Anchor House on July 5, 2021. After investigations, Zulu was apprehended and in interrogations he confessed to have strangled Sharma using an electric cable. The incident is said to have happened when Zulu went to do some casual work for Sharma after which the deceased offered him whisky. Police investigations revealed that when Zulu got drunk, Sharma attempted to sodomise him but he overpowered the deceased and strangled him to death with an electric cable.

The police report states that after killing Sharma, Zulu stole the 32-inch television set which he sold on Katondo Street at K1, 200. On July 16, 2021 an identification parade was conducted and a witness identified Zulu as the one she saw carrying the television set said to have been stolen. During a crime scene reconstruction, Zulu demonstrated how he strangled Sharma, led police officers to Katondo Street, and pointed at a man identified as Kyabu Kwanda who helped him to find a buyer of the TV which he sold to a passerby.
