VETERAN politician and freedom fighter, Sikota Wina, has died.
And President Hakainde Hichilema has described his death as a great loss to the nation.
Mr Hichilema said Zambia is mourning the death of Mr Wina, a freedom fighter and proud patriot.
And Acting Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa confirmed the death of Mr. Wina at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) yesterday after an illness.
President Hichilema said in his Facebook post that he has learnt with deep sadness the death of Mr Wina.
Mr. Hichilema said the thoughts and prayers of Zambians are with the bereaved family who have lost a beloved father, grandfather and patriarch.
And veteran politician, Vernon Mwaanga has described Mr Wina’s death, whom he said had to deal with health challenges in the later years of his life as saddening.
Dr. Mwaanga in a statement said Mr. Wina whom he defined as an icon, tirelessly participated in the struggle for independence.
He said Mr. Wina has left a permanent mark on the country’s political history through his work as a politician and a cabinet minister.
“His work as a parliamentary secretary for local government to Dr. Kenneth Kaunda during the UNIP-ANC coalition government of 1962 and subsequently as a Cabinet Minister from October 24, 1964, has left an indelible mark on the political history of our country,” Dr. Mwaanga said.
Mr Kangwa said his office was working with Mr. Wina’s family on funeral arrangements after which a detailed burial programme would be released.
Mr Kangwa urged the public to ensure the Covid-19 guidelines are observed during the funeral being held at Mr Wina’s home in Mimosa area, Chilanga.
