…as he discloses that the investor will also spend about US$20m in communities through corporate social responsibility every year

By NATION REPORTER

VEDANTA Resources will set up a power plant at the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) which will be the main source of power supply, Advocates for National Development and Democracy (ANDD) Executive Director Samuel Banda has disclosed.

Mr Banda said, the investor has seen it fit to set up a power plant so that there will be no power challenges at the mine.

Mr Banda disclosed that, this means that the mine will no longer depend on the power supplied by Zesco.

He said the power plant will be generating power using the underground water from the mine.

Mr Banda indicated that about 80, 000 cubic meters of water go to waste at the mine, therefore, the investor wants to utilise the water to start generating power. “These are some of the important things that the people need to know about what the investor wants at the mine. This development is commendable because the mine will no longer depend on the national energy security.

The underground water at KCM of about 80, 000 cubic meters is taken to Kafue river, instead of taking it to the river, Vedanta will instead use it to generate power and this will be a reality,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Banda said the investor will be spending about US$20 million to communities through the corporate social responsibility (CSR).

He said through the CSR, the communities will be proposing projects which need to be done.

“That US$20 million is equivalent to K500 million and it is more than the CDF, it will be going to the communities,” he said.

He said Vedanta Resources will embark on refurbishing all recreation facilities.

Mr Banda said such development is welcome as it is aimed at revamp the social activities in the communities.
