No plot to disrupt HH inauguration - Musonda

SOCIAL Anthropologist James Musonda has dismissed claims that there are plans to disrupt the upcoming presidential inauguration through protests and unlawful public processions.

Mr Musonda argues that there is no evidence to support fears that Zambians intend to rise against the government, noting that citizens have remained largely peaceful despite political tensions and controversial developments following the general election.

This follows a statement by Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba, who claimed that the Zambia Police Service had received credible intelligence indicating that certain groups and individuals were planning to incite members of the public to participate in unlawful processions and protests, including during the inauguration ceremony scheduled for September 1, 2026.

Mr Musamba said the Police Service was also aware of ongoing efforts to mobilise members of the public to protest against the detention of certain suspects currently in police custody.

The Police boss stated that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of assembly and association, such rights must be exercised within the confines of the law, warning that those involved in unlawful activities would be dealt with firmly.

But Mr Musonda has dismissed the claims of planned protests, describing them as alarmist and unsupported by evidence.

Mr Musonda says Zambians have witnessed political tensions following the election without resorting to widespread protests, arguing that this does not support claims of an imminent national security threat.

According to him, Zambia is a Christian nation that has remained peaceful, and leaders should focus on promoting unity rather than making statements that could create unnecessary fear and tension. MILLENNIUM TV
