TAZARA under resuscitation – Minister

By NATION REPORTER
THE Tanzania-Zambia Railways (TAZARA) will be revamped in order to make the joint company viable once again, Transport and Communications minister, Mutotwe Kafwaya has said.
Mr Kafwaya said Government would make sure that the joint railway company was able to stand on its own instead of depending on the treasury for support.
He said during an interview on Kasama Radio that TAZARA should start managing its own operations such as paying of salaries.

“Last year, I was the chairman for the Council of Ministers for TAZARA, this year I am the co-chairman. “Last year, I travelled to Tanzania for the Council of Ministers’ meeting, and in that meeting we requested the board of TAZARA that they write a business case which will guide us on how we will revamp the company,” he said Mr Kafwaya said in the business case, the board should indicate clearly how many engineers the company should have, the number of locomotives they wanted to have as well as wagons.
He said the board was also requested to come up with a budget that would support the business case so as to overcome the challenges the company was going through.
Mr Kafwaya said Zambia and Tanzania were committed to ensuring that TAZARA regained its lost glory.
