THE launched in-house training for police officers should also focus on stamping out “deep rooted” corruption among the men and women in uniform, the Green Party has advised Inspector General of Police, Kakoma Kanganja.
Green Party president, Peter Sinkamba prodded Mr Kanganja to ensure that officers were trained on how to avoid corruption in their line of duty.
The police command yesterday launched an in-house training for police officers aimed at enhancing proficiency and effectiveness in the service.
Mr Sinkamba however said the command should ensure police officers remain professional and uphold the integrity of the service by broadening the training.
He said that it was important for the police to avoid corruption and remain non-partisan and leave politics to politicians.
Mr Sinkamba was speaking following the launch of the Zambia Police Service, in-service training aimed at equipping police offers with appropriate skills to perform their duties meeting expectations of the community.
Launching the training programme at Zambia Police College yesterday, Mr Kanganja said his command attached great importance to trainng because as it was the foundation of any functional system.
He said training was a critical tool to enhancing proficiency and effectiveness in every organisation, the Zambia Police Service inclusive.
“I wish from the onset to announce that this programme is not only commencing here at Lilayi but also in the other two police training schools and a total of 150 officers will undergo training during the initial refresher course in crowd management.
“I have directed that all trainees be imparted and exposed to similar skills in order to obtain standardised skills in handling and dealing with riotous behaviour,” he said.
Mr Kanganja said the training programme would be ongoing and that his command would ensure that almost every police officer was ex-posed to the training as it was for purposes of adequately preparing for policing of the 2021 general elections and beyond.
He added that Government had acquired modern equipment in line with the United Nations Standards on Crowd Management.
He said that the assorted equipment and tools would help enhance operational efficiency in the police service as officers will now be able to swiftly respond to any form of crime.
Mr Kanganja stated that the equipment would enable officers to proficiently police the 2021 general election.
He said the procurement of modern equipment was meant to meet proper policing methods of modern times.
Mr Kanganja wondered why some quarters of society were circulating lies on social media suggesting that arming the police with equipment was meant to intimidate the public.
