NINE trucks carrying Mukula logs have been intercepted in Kasempa in a joint operation by the Forestry Department, Zambia Police and National Parks and Wildlife.
And another truck loaded with 130 logs of mukula logs has been impounded in Mwinilunga.
North Western Province Commissioner of Police Auxensio Daka told the Daily Nation the trucks were intercepted on Sunday around 14:00 hours in Ntengu Game Management Area.
“I can confirm that a combined team of officers from Forestry Department, National Parks and Zambia Police intercepted nine trucks loaded with Mukula logs after a tip from the public,” Mr Daka said.
He said the 9 trucks are parked at Kasempa nine police while eight out of nine drivers are in police custody to help with investigations.
“Only one driver is on the run,” Mr Daka added.
Meanwhile, police in Mwinilunga yesterday intercepted a truck loaded with 130 logs of the Mukula tree.
Mr Daka said the truck was heading to Angola via Kamapanda border post.
He however said the matter had already been taken to court and the owner, Mercy Mutumba, 26, of Mongu has been sentenced to 24 months simple imprisonment suspended to 36 months and fined K2, 500.
However the truck and the logs have been forfeited to the State.
