THE Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ) has organised an open chess tournament to commemorate Zambia’s 52nd Independence celebrations to which all players within Zone 4 have been invited.

CFZ president Ericko Nshikokola told the Daily Nation that the tournament was to keep the players active since there was no major tournament coming ahead soon.

Nshikokola however that the event should be taken seriously because it had the blessing of the international federation.

He said the event was likely to bring together big names in chess as they would be looking to better their ratings, adding that upcoming players should seize the opportunity to improve their standing and gain the experience they needed.

He said the event, which would run from October 22 to 24 , would attract a small token of K2,000 and K1,000 for those who will emerge victorious in the male and female categories respectively and would in a special way celebrate Zambia’s 52nd Independence anniversary.

He urged chess players in the region to take the tournament seriously since it will be an open individual tournament where individual payers competed among themselves.

“The Zone 4 Chess Federation of Zambia has organised an Independence open individual chess tournament slated for 22nd to 24th October and we expect big names among our players who will be looking forward to safeguarding their rating.

“This also gives an opportunity to upcoming players to improve their ratings and apart from that, there is a small token of K2,000 for the overall winner in the male category and K1,000 in the female category,” said Nshikokola

He appealed  to the players that would be participating at this year’s Independence tournament to take it seriously because it would be federated.
