Zambian First Lady Esther Lungu has challenged comedians under the ‘Local is Laka’ Comedy Magazine to consider setting up a talent school to promote entrepreneurship and economic development.
Speaking on Friday night when she graced the second edition of the ‘Local is Laka’ Comedy Show in partnership with the Esther Lungu Foundation Trust held at Mulungushi, the First Lady emphasized on the need to focus on talent identification in comedy.
“As a country, let us also begin to focus on the issue of talent identification as a way of improving our economy. There are various business concepts around talent identification and I challenge you who are in comedy to lead in this area,” she said.
“Why don’t you start a Talent School or why not start a Zambia Professional Comedy Institute because you are the current leaders in this area. Be the innovators, be the talent entrepreneurs that can diversify your businesses.”
Mrs. Lungu further urged all concerned parents and guardians to promote a culture of moulding children into believing in creating employment rather than waiting for employment opportunities.
“The challenge for us all is the need to re-examine how we mould our children. Let us not mould our children to look forward to getting employment, let us mould them to create employment, let us mould them to own businesses and to be innovators because this is what grows economies around the world,” the First Lady advised before she later joined the audience to enjoy the comic performances by the Zambia Comedy Magazine actors.
This included Derrick ‘Dangerous Joburg’ Kondowe who was MC for the night. He handled his duties very well clad in a sky-blue suit demanding lots of authority and pomp. He introduced Collins ‘The President’ Zulu’ as the first act and his usual mimic of public figures including former presidents was his greatest highlight to send the audience into laughter. Through his act, one could easily relate to the current affairs happening in our country ranging from the in-form Under 20 Soccer Team to the politics surrounding our nation.
Next on line was Bob Nkosha, famously known for his jokes bordering on everyday life and some memorable childhood moments. Straight out of the Copperbelt was the hilarious Shike Mwisho. The man is a serious comic who takes his act like normal life. He hit strong jokes on tribes, churches and Zambian people. He skillfully ‘robbed’ the audience with his collection of offering during his act as a Pentecostal church pastor. Making him cash in enough for a month’s groceries and essentials.
The daring Brighton Sinkala was on fire as the fourth act causing serious laughter with his satirical stories. He spared no one in the VIP section with random audience attacks and jokes. His dancing was equally entertaining. Last on the line was the ever-charming Dorika, played by Bob Nkosha.
This was a complete summary of every act that was seen before. ‘Her’ dance, language and careless talk made the show highly interactive as she picked at several dignitaries in the audience including Daily Nation proprietor Richard Sakala.
The event whose proceeds will be channeled to the Esther Lungu Foundation Trust was made possible by a chain of sponsors including Daily Nation, Shoprite Zambia, Teviem Enterprises, Gourock Zambia and Gatbro International. Others are Zamtel Limited, Superior Milling and ZNBC.
