IT IS illegal and an attempt to bring anarchy in the country for UPND president Hakainde Hichilema and his vice for administration Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba ( GBM) to demand for the release of their members who are detained before they are tried by the courts of law, Chief Government spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili has charged In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Kambwili who is Information and Broadcasting minister, warned the Mr Hichilema and Mr Mwamba wanted to cause confusion in the country.

He said their demand for Obvious Mwaliteta and other party members in incarceration to be freed without trial was illegal and an attempt to bring about anarchy. Mr Kambwili wondered how and why Mr Hichilema, who he said was a learned man, would think persons charged with serious offences would be let scott free without trial.

He disclosed that most of the UPND members in incarceration were charged with robbery, assault and other serious offences. Mr Kambwili warned that the law would visit any person trying to disturb peace in the country, regardless of their party affiliations. “The move by the UPND to demand for the release of their members is illegal and only aimed at causing confusion in the country. How can a person charged with robbery be freed without trial? Mr Hichilema should know better as a learned man.

Mr Kambwili advised the UPND to let the courts do their job which he said were mandated to do so and also let justice prevail. He noted that robbery was a serious offence and that there was need for perpetrators of such offences to be brought to book.

Mr Hichilema and GBM have rolled out an illegal campaign to demand for the release of their members charged with robbery and other serious offences without trial.
