CONSTRUCTION works on Lolanda water treatment plant in Kafue are progressing well and are expected to be completed before the scheduled time, Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) public relations officer, Tospy Sikalinda, has said.
Mr Sikalinda said the works, which were commissioned in July this year, were progressing well on the banks of Kafue River because the contractor doing the job was serious.
‘‘So far we have started the construction of the water intake on the banks of the Kafue River and our teams are currently marking the route for the pipe that will run from Kafue to Lusaka which is about 65 kilometres long and the contractor is scheduled to finish the works in August 2018, but the contractor is trying hard to beat the deadline,” said Mr Sikalinda.
He said the US$150 million project will bring in about 50 million litres of water per day from Kafue to Lusaka and the project has three components which included the treatment plant , the 65 km pipeline from Kafue to Lusaka and the booster pump station in Chilanga area.
Mr Sikalinda explained that once the works were completed, the water utility company will increase Lusaka’s water supply capacity from the current 250 to 300 million litres, stating that demand was currently standing at about 400 million litres per day.
A check by the Daily Nation on Saturday found contractors working on the site, carrying out construction works on the banks of the Kafue River.
