UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) in Mkushi has urged government to handle cholera problem with caution.
In interview with the Daily Nation, UPND Mkushi District chairman Davie Nyoni said there was need to handle the cholera disease with care without blowing the issue out of proportion.
Mr. Nyoni noted that all that government needed to do was to sensitise the public on food and personal hygiene as well as management of waste instead of destroying makeshift structures.
Mr. Nyoni said dismantling vendors makeshift structures in central business districts was not the solution toward combating the deadly disease.
“Cholera has nothing to do with the kind of building some one is using but personal hygiene and management of human waste as it is one way of preventing the disease,” Mr. Nyoni said.
Mr. Nyoni added that, the other way was for government to provide safe drinking water to the public by sinking more boreholes in rural areas where people in most cases share water sources with animals.
Mr. Nyoni however thanked government for inducing sanity in central business districts of towns. He said the move will go a long way in promoting hygienic practices if maintained. Adding that, the trading places are now clear and orderly without congestion.
Mr. Nyoni has since appealed to traders to observe high hygienic practices to avert outbreak of diarrhoeal diseases such as cholera.
