A HIGH-SPEED police chase in Ndola’s central business district yesterday ended up in death after an escaping motorist failed to negotiate a corner and hit a boy selling eggs killing him on the spot.

This incident triggered widespread riots in the CBD with angry residents blocking roads with stones. The protests spread to the entire central business district resulting in shops and offices closing for business.

Police in riot gear had to teargas the protesting mob to disperse them and later removed stones that had been placed to block access of roads.

According to eyewitnesses, traffic police officers were chasing motorist who had sped off on Makoli road and but in the process failed to negotiate a corner and knocked down the boy who was seated at the famous slave tree.

Ndola Mayor Amon Chisenga, who rushed to the scene was caught in the protest, and had his vehicle shattered by the rioters wielding stones.

“The vehicle was trailed from Spar shopping area and turned onto Makoli road and hit into the boy who was selling eggs at the famous slave tree where he was seated,” the witness narrated.

The police only managed to restore calm after an hour and retrieved the body from the scene.

Efforts to get detailed account of the incident from Copperbelt police deputy commissioner Wamunyima Wamunyima failed by press time his office had not yet received feedback from the officers on the ground.
