GOVERNMENT should invest heavily in geological mapping and exploration across the country to access more mineral resources and curb illegal mining, Chief Mulilo of Muchinga Province has said.
Chief Mulilo said illegal mining of gold and other minerals under pretext of exploration was rife, hence the need for Government to carryout nationwide mapping.
He said in an interview yesterday that mapping the country would enable the Ministry of Mines have information on availability of minerals in various areas and heighten security against illegal mining.
The traditional leader said there were many companies that were illegally mining but were pretending to be conducting explorations.
Chief Mulilo said his chiefdom was endowed with precious stones therefore there was need for Government to explore and map the area to attract potential investors.
He said mining of gold and other minerals could turn around the economic landscape of the country hence the need to treat it as a matter of urgency.
