GOVT PONDERS NEW METHODS OF DEALING WITH STREET VENDORS

By ADRIAN MWANZA

GOVERNMENT is pondering on coming up with a new method  of ensuring that vendors are removed from the Central Business District of Lusaka, Local Government minister Garry Nkombo has said.

Mr Nkombo in an interview said that his ministry was trying to come up with a strategy and model that would enable them to remove vendors off the streets of Lusaka.

He said government had not backtracked on its earlier stance of removing the vendors to create sanity on the streets but that they had faced resistance.

“What I can tell you is that we are working out a model which I can’t tell you because it is in the pipelines but we are going to inform the public at a later date,” he said.

Mr Nkombo said that it was unfortunate that the vendors had overlooked his directive but that he would ensure that they moved from the streets since they were given designated areas to trade from.

He said he was working with a number of stakeholders to ensure that they dealt with the matter once and for all.
