Erosion of moral fibre worries church

BY SIMON MUNTEMBA

The barbaric act of rape in a video which has gone viral showing a man forcing himself on a woman in the bush in Chipata as the crowd cheered on instead of helping the victim attests to the erosion of moral fibre in our society, the United Church of Zambia has said.

UCZ Eastern Presbytery Bishop, Reverend Martha Siame said the Church was concerned at the inhumane behaviour of the people who were watching and cheering instead of helping the victim.

Rev Siame said the act of sexual abuse portrayed in the video was just one of the many abuses against women and girls that have reached alarming levels in society.

She called upon all citizens to condemn the act with the contempt it deserves.

As a church, she said, we condemn in strongest terms the barbaric act of rape in a video which has gone viral showing a man and woman having sex in the bush as the crowd cheered on.

“The church is thanking the Zambia police for arresting the two people in connection with the matter,” she said.Rev Siame said it was the church’s hope that all the perpetrators of the act would be made to account for their actions and face the wrath of the law.
