No electricity tariffs hike for now – Minister

By SIMON MUNTEMBA

GOVERNMENT is still waiting for the cost of electricity service study for it to look at the revision of the electricity prices, Minister of Energy, Peter Kapala has said.

Mr Kapala said there would be no increment in electricity tariffs until the cost of service study was completed and analysed.

In December 2019, Government through the Energy Regulatory Board (ERB), launched the electricity cost of service study which will among others, indicate the cost of electricity, undertake the load forecast and develop the system expansion plan to meet the future demand in an efficient and effective manner.

Commenting on reports that there was looming electricity tariffs increment, Mr Kapala said the cost of electricity service study would determine the adjustment of the price.

He said in an interview that the cost of electricity service study was not yet submitted to his office stressing that once it comes out, the government through the Ministry of Energy will share it with stakeholders so that they can look at it and discuss the way forward.

Mr Kapala said all stakeholders, including Zesco, would be engaged on the findings.
