LARRY Mweetwa is wanted by the police for allegedly swindling UPND Dundumwezi Member of Parliament Edgar Sing’ombe and is also being sought for other criminal charges, Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo has disclosed.

Mr Kampyongo has meanwhile clarified that Mr Mweetwa was sent back without his knowledge by the immigration officers at Kazungula Border because he engaged in political activities after using a British passport to enter Zambia.

The Minister said had he been consulted by the immigration authorities, he would have advised them to allow Mr Mweetwa into the country so that he could answer various criminal charges.

He explained that Dundumwezi MP had reported Mr Mweetwa at Matero police station for allegedly swindling him undisclosed amount of money.

“On one hand, as a minister of Home Affairs I am aware that this gentleman is wanted by the police because, we have Zambian citizens who have complaints against him bordering on criminality. One of the complainants is from Dundundumwezi MP. Honourable Edgar Sing’ombe lodged a complaint when he was swindled by Mweetwa at Matero police station.

“So if I was asked by the immigration officers that denied him entry, I would have told them to allow him in so that he could have been summon at the police to answer his alleged criminal activities,” Mr Kampyongo said.

Mr Kampyongo clarified that Mr Mweetwa was not deported but sent back to UK by the immigration authorities at Kazungula Boarder because he started engaging in Zambian political activities after using a British passport to enter the country.

He said: “The correct position is that he was not deported. Deportation warrant of any undesirable foreign national is done under this minister’s hand, and the minister (himself), doesn’t remember signing any such a warrant.”

“I also want to make it clear that as a minister, I don’t micro-manage the operations of immigration officers. Even as we sit here, there are several foreign nationals that are coming in and out of Zambia using different border posts and airports, at different times.
