PF to amend constitution, says Chilangwa

THE Patriotic Front constitution is going to be amended to meet people’s aspirations, acting Secretary General Nickson Chilangwa has said.

Mr Chilangwa said the PF constitution would be amended during the general conference.

The former ruling party is expected to hold the general conference in June this year to elect a party President to take over from former republican President Edgar Lungu.

A number of people have shown interest to contest its presidency.  These include former Democratic Congress Party leader Chishimba Kambwili, former ambassador to Ehiopia Emmanuel Mwamba and Kamfinsa Member of Parliament, Christopher Kang’ombe, among others.

Mr Chilangwa said the PF central committee will discuss whether the constitution can be amended before or during the general conference.

He said the central committee is expected to put in place a committee which will look into the matter.  He said it will ratify the planned committee at its next meeting.

Mr Chilangwa said the committee will look at the electoral rules which will be used at the f general conference.

He said, “the committee needs to look into requirements which will enable an individual to qualify and be a candidate for the presidency at the general conference.

“We are doing all this in the best interest of the country.   PF is a big organisation and our interest should be that of Zambians,” he said.

And Mr Chilangwa said as it stands, Mr Kambwili and Mr Mwamba qualify to contest the party’s presidency.

He said the precedence was set in 2015 after the death of President Michael Sata where 11 people showed interest to be party president and some of them were not members.

“So when the committee brings its report, it will tell us what should be done and what shouldn’t be done,” Mr Chilangwa said.
