Defence auditgate: UPND shall account

By NATION REPORTER

THE Patriotic Front (PF) says it will not shy away from demanding accountability from the UPND administration over the hiring of Grant Thornton and Price Water House Coopers (PWC), the two private audit firms to audit the books of accounts for the country’s defence and Security Wings.

The former ruling party has insisted that the hiring of the two private firms to intrude into the financial books of the defence and security wings was done outside the prescribed law and that the government should provide credible answers to Zambians over the scandal.

Mr Stephen Kampyongo, the Opposition Chief Whip in Parliament said innuendoes and spite that the PF was objecting to the private audit of the defence and security wings because of the fear of the outcome was not going to stop the former ruling party from demanding sincerity from the UPND.

Mr Kampyongo, who is also Shiwang’andu PF Member of Parliament said in an interview that there had been too many contradicting statements from Government and that Zambians had the right to be worried that the security and sovereignty of their country was being compromised.

He stated that it was the sincere belief of the PF that the UPND had breached the law in the process of procuring the services of Grant Thornton and PWC and that until adequate answers were provided, the governing party was not going to get away with impunity.

Mr Kampyongo stated that the PF was not worried about what would come out of the audit of the defence and security wings but were deeply concerned with the propensity of the UPND in breaking the rule of law.

He explained that the country’s defence and security wings were public institutions and it was wrong for the UPND to begin treating the institutions as if they were private entities belonging to individuals in the ruling party.
