Govt passionate about providing free education even at tertiary level

GOVERNMENT is passionate about providing free education and desires to provide free education even at tertiary level in future to ensure that most Zambians are educated, Vice President Mutale Nalumango has said.

Ms Nalumango said this during the launch of the Mutale Nalumango scholarships by Cavendish University in Lusaka yesterday.

The scholarships were awarded to two girls who would be studying Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and Bachelor of Science in computing respectively.

Ms Nalumango said she was humbled and grateful that the university decided to name the scholarship after her, calling on stakeholders to come on board and support the initiative that Cavendish University has started.

“My prayer is that this will not be a once off thing but it begins to be done annually and we can be able to grow to bigger numbers and this can only be done if others also come on board and partner with the university.

And Cavendish University Deputy Vice Chancellor Oscar Correia said the university was passionate about quality education through transformation of students through excellence and innovation and that was a key element in the universities statement.

Mr Correia said the university was very keen in developing STEM in Zambia and have since made ICT skills mandatory for all its students at the university.

He said the scholarships that had been awarded were evidence that the university cared about the country having a well-groomed crop of personnel working in the different sectors for the country’s economic development.
