Increase in bus fares will worsen poverty – CSPR
THE Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) in Monze says the upward adjustment of bus fares by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) will increase the cost of living exacerbate poverty among Zambians.
RTSA Head of Public Relations Mukela Mangolwa announced that the upward adjustment in bus fares comes in the wake of the increase in the pump prices of fuel by K2.73 per litre for petrol and K2.81 per litre for diesel with effect from February1, 2023.
Commenting on the development, CSPR Monze district coordinator, Kebby Salisimu told the Daily Nation that the increase in the pump price of fuel, which has influenced the increase in bus fares will ultimately result in an increase in prices of essential commodities.
Mr Salisimu expressed concern that bus operators were quick to increase bus fares but reluctant to reduce prices whenever there is a reduction in the pump price of fuel.
He said commodity prices will continue to increase, which would negatively affect the majority Zambians
Mr Salisimu warned that increase in bus fares and essential commodities would escalate poverty levels in the country.
