5 arrested, charged for UNZA riots

THE police have arrested and charged five people among them four students on one count of breaking into a building and committing a felony therein contrary to section 303 (A)(B) of the Penal Code Act Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia during a riot at the University of Zambia (UNZA) Great East Road campus.

Police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga said following the riots at UNZA that occurred between September 18, 2023 around 19:00 hours and September 19, 2023 around 00:10 hours the police arrested the five. 

Mr. Hamoonga said the four have been identified as Chawezi Muwowo aged 21 of Kabangwe, a first-year student studying economics, Kennedy Banda aged 24 of Kapiri Mposhi, a fourth-year student studying project management, Kizito Banda aged 20 of Chilanga, a second-year student studying civil engineering and Masho Kapembwa Mulenga aged 21, of Salama Park, a third-year student studying law.

He said the other person who was arrested was Gift Kambela aged 23 of Mutendere B, an ice cream seller at the UNZA spar.

Mr. Hamoonga said Police have since recovered one by 25kg bag of mealie meal, two deep freezers, photograph albums all valued at K12, 010, 00 and among the exhibits was a closed-circuit television footage.

The suspects have been released on police bond awaiting court appearance.
