Honey industry collapsing

THE honey industry is on the cusp of collapsing with hundreds of jobs and people’s livelihoods on the brink of destitution as a result of the unreasonable and duplicated levies on apiculture.

Daniel Ball, Zambia Apiculture Trade Association (ZAPITRADE) chairperson says so far, 1,500 tonnes of honey worth K57 million meant for export is stuck in a warehouse because the high charges levied by Government have rendered the industry unviable.

Mr Ball said in an interview that ZAPITRADE members would not buy 500 tonnes of honey from bee keepers in rural areas as result of the unfavorable levies.
