ONLY law breakers have cause to worry because I will definitely go after them, deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations, Charity Katanga has warned.

Ms Katanga said working with other senior police officers, she would ensure that law and order prevailed by going after ring leaders of anarchy.

She said in an interview yesterday that as a lawyer, she would be fair and impartial in the application of the law but hard on those who would deliberately want to dare the police.

Ms Katanga was reacting to remarks by MMD president, Dr Nevers Mumba, who charged that Zambia was not safe under the changes made in the police service that President Edgar Lungu had constituted to lead the country into the August 12 general elections.

Dr Mumba singled out Ms Katanga as a person who would make it extremely difficult for elections to be free and fair.

He said Ms Katanga would make it difficult for the opposition to campaign as shown at how she made it difficult for the opposition to hold meetings when she served as Copperbelt Province police commissioner.

But Ms Katanga said she was surprised that everyone was talking about her appointment when there were also others.

She said Dr Mumba should know that she was ready to dialogue with any political party leaders but tough on those that were trying to cause anarchy.

“Pastor Mumba should know that besides being a career police officer, I am also a lawyer who respect human rights. The only people I will not allow to go scot free are those who would want to dare us as police.

“I will hold political party leaders accountable. I will go for the head because I know that cadres are just sent to cause anarchy. So, tell Dr Nevers Mumba that I will go after law breakers only,” she said.

Ms Katanga said the political leaders would not run away from being made accountable by way of saying it was not them who caused crimes but their cadres because normally, supporters are sent by their leaders.
